Money laundering is one of the main challenges to the integrity of the financial and business system, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which face technological and internal control limitations in preventing this crime. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of artificial intelligence tools on money laundering prevention and detection during the period 2020-2025. The research adopted a qualitative approach, with a documentary design and a descriptive-analytical scope, based on a review of current regulations, official reports from the Financial and Economic Analysis Unit (UAFE), IFRS for SMEs, statistics on reports of unusual and unjustified transactions, and specialized scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025. The results showed a limited incorporation of artificial intelligence tools in SMEs, attributed mainly to technological, economic, and training constraints. Furthermore, it was found that the financial sector accounted for the largest proportion of suspicious transaction reports, while the non-financial sector exhibited a lower detection capacity, a situation exacerbated by new regulatory requirements demanding timely reporting and automated processes. It is concluded that artificial intelligence significantly strengthens anti-money laundering (AML) prevention and detection mechanisms by improving the analysis of large volumes of information, the early identification of risk patterns, and regulatory compliance
