Abstract

This study examines the development of gender-responsive managerial competencies as a key factor in strengthening the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the city of Machala, Ecuador. The research adopted a descriptive design with a qualitative approach, applying semi-structured interviews to nine women leaders from diverse business sectors. Data were analyzed through triangulation, identifying patterns related to structural barriers, socioemotional competencies, and strategic and digital skills. The findings reveal that women entrepreneurs face persistent sociocultural and institutional obstacles, such as gender stereotypes and limited access to internationalization opportunities. Nevertheless, they demonstrate high levels of resilience, empathy, and communication, as well as a growing interest in digital transformation and training in foreign trade. It is concluded that gender-responsive managerial competencies strengthen business leadership, promote equity in decision-making, and contribute to the sustainable development of local SMEs. It is recommended to reinforce institutional support, foster continuous training, and create inclusive policies that boost women’s participation in global markets.
