Digital exclusion in informal settlements in Spain: A new phenomenon within social exclusion.

In this third decade of the 21st century, the generalization of ICTs to both layers of the population lead to the establishment of structural differences between those who have access and knowledge in the use of devices and applications and those who do not, generating processes of digital exclusion. This phenomenon is referred to as digital exclusion, a more versatile concept than the digital divide and better adapted to the study of the processes of social fragmentation caused by digitalization. Although there are approaches to the study of social exclusion in residential exclusion environments, in Spain few of them introduce digital exclusion as a dimension within their analysis. This research is presented as a study that introduces the study of digital exclusion within informal settlements in Spain. For this purpose, it uses the statistical exploitation of the survey KËR: I State Map on racial and/or ethnic discrimination in the field of housing and informal settlements in Spain. Using the data from this study, the aim is to validate whether in contexts of extreme social exclusion, digital exclusion is determined by factors of origin, gender and age or, on the contrary, only by income levels.
